Accessible Menus Update

I have still not seen anything promoted to help menus at restaurants be more accessible.  But, a great idea that was posted as a comment prompted me to think more about what could be done to make ordering food easier. As of now, I try to use what I have.  I look up menus on [...]

A Collection of Thoughts on Transportation

Does anyone have experience with hiring someone to drive you around?  I know this is definitely not something I can do now, but maybe at some point way down the road.  Ah, it would be amazing to actually have control over where I can go and when I get there! I am a big fan [...]

Captioning will be provided for Election Coverage

PBS NewsHour received a grant to use volunteers to caption election coverage.  The service begins with President Obama’s State of the Union Address on January 24th.  In addition to providing captioning for the Deaf, it will provide translations for other languages. This information was gathered from Deaf News Today: http://deafnewstoday.blogspot.com/2012/01/pbs-political-captioning.html?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter Now, whether you like it [...]

SOPA and PIPA: What They May Mean for Accessibility

The big news of today is SOPA and PIPA, the two internet piracy bills that will greatly hinder the free web if they go through.  The following post will be a jumble of thoughts going amok in my head, but I would like to put a new spin on the whole debate. PC World has [...]

How Much Bionic is Too Much Bionic?

Now that I have a cochlear implant, I get jokes about being half robot, or half bionic.  For hearing, the label is more than worth it.  And, the ability to turn it off and on at will is awesome. Now there is talk about bionic eyes that can help restore vision for the blind.  More [...]

Considering a Cochlear Implant? Here’s What You Should Know.

I’ve written about the cochlear implant and my own personal experiences with it many times on this blog, but a coworker suggested that I write a more detailed overview of the steps in the process of getting one. First off, there’s an evaluation process.  When I first lost my hearing in my right ear, I [...]

What E-Book Readers are the Most Accessible?

I found a great article from the Braille Monitor that does a comprehensive overview of most e-book readers and what they offer in terms of accessibility. Here’s the link: http://www.nfb.org/images/nfb/Publications/bm/bm12/bm1201/bm120105.htm The overall goal is to integrate accessibility into the e-reader’s operating system itself.  There should be a set of standard requirements for e-readers and mobile [...]

Rock Vibe – A Game for Both the Blind and Sighted

I recently got an email from Rupinder Dhillon, the creator of the game Rock Vibe.  It is currently in the process of getting funding so that it can be completed.  Rock Vibe is a musical rhythm game (think Rock Band or Guitar Hero) that is designed to be played on the computer instead of a [...]

Access Together Mobile Website

I’ve never really gotten the point of Four Square.  I’m referring to the app that allows you to check into various places and become the mayor.  Whatever that means. The idea has spun off to create a new and very useful app called Access Together. If you have an iPhone, Android, or Blackberry, you can [...]

E-book Lending in Libraries

For about a year or so, libraries nationwide have been offering e-books to download on Nooks, and other tablets or smartphones that support the e-pub format.  Kindle Library Lending began this past fall and is proving to be quite successful. For someone like me who can’t get to a brick and mortar library easily since [...]
