Phone Phobia
Someone brought up the topic of phone phobias on one of the cochlear implant facebook groups I belong to. When they said that I let out a huge sigh of relief because I was thinking…whew glad it isn’t just me! Interacting with people face to face when you have hearing loss is tough enough. Adding [...]

Glasses with Subtitles
For the deaf and hard of hearing, going to movies or watching TV can be a real challenge. For me at least, just because it is louder, doesn’t mean the sound is any clearer. Here’s something worth checking out – Glasses with built in subtitles: http://www.popsci.com/gadgets/article/2011-08/sonys-subtitling-glasses-hearing-impaired-project-film-dialogue-directly-set-specs The glasses line up pretty well against the screen [...]

Closed Captioning for Your Cell Phone
I’ve gotten to the point where I have a really hard time understanding people on the phone. So, I usually request text or email. I can access email all the time since I can just check it on my iPhone. Verizon’s frequency causes my hearing aid to make an obnoxious buzzing sound when I put [...]

Captions not only help the hard of hearing, but foreign language speakers as well. Video descriptions are helpful for the blind and for [...]

You know those assembly line style restaurants like Subway? For someone who is hard of hearing, those are an incredible struggle. Add trying to see the toppings to that, and it can become a headache. The good news is that at some restaurants, you can order online. This has been a lifesaver on many occasions. [...]

More Theatre-Goers Will Enjoy Broadway Through Unprecedented Accessibility Initiative
One of my favorite places to visit is New York City so I was pleased to read an article this morning which informed me that Broadway is going to make their shows more accessible. Alliance for Inclusion in the Arts and G-PASS have formed a partnership that will allow 1.1 million New Yorkers and [...]
Some Advice on Speaking to People with Hearing Loss
This post is advice based on personal experience that can be echoed by many others who have hearing loss. There is a common misconception that when someone has hearing loss, you need to increase the volume of your voice. There seems to be a stigma attached to a hearing aid. If someone sees a hearing [...]

What Words Really Mean
All of my life I’ve been called visually and hearing impaired. I never thought anything about it. To me, it just means I still have vision and hearing, but not to the full extent. To me, being called deaf-blind would imply that I am fully deaf and fully blind. I noticed something somewhere about how, [...]
